iPad 3 - Can you really tell the difference? |
Unveiled on the 7th of March but not actually released until the 16th, the launch of the Apple iPad 3 left Apple geeks throughout the world trembling with excitement. It boasts an impressive HD screen with four times better resolution than its predecessor - the iPad 2.
That’s pretty much where the new features end. Cosmetically it looks the same, feels the same and generally just isn’t a whole lot different to the iPad 2. Granted the only thing I’ve ever done on an iPad is play Angry Birds, but still if I’m going to fork out £399 minimum on a product it better come out of the box singing and dancing with bells on. The iPad 3 does not do that. As one would expect with the launch of any new Apple product, crowds of people queued for hours just to be near the new iPad 3 and generally the reviews have been positive. Although like me, many are failing to see why this was released as a new product rather than just an update. However there is still no denying that the iPad 3 is probably the best tablet out there. Techradar gave the new iPad 4.5 stars out of 5 but said, “call it what you want, but it's a device that from the outside looks remarkably like the iPad 2 but with an overhaul on the innards.” I think even the word ‘overhaul’ is a bit strong … that suggests dramatic change. Read - Techradar's full review here.
Gizmodo also gave the iPad 3 a fairly average review describing it as “better than anything else but kind of a letdown.” Again, find the full review here.
Maybe I’m being slightly unfair on the new iPad but I’ve never really been caught up in the ‘Apple Craze’. I’m happy enough sitting at home playing snake on my Nokia 3310.
However, in the interest of being fair here are some of the better and updated features of the iPad 3.
- The battery life. It now lasts up to an impressive ten hours of constant use, pretty good by today’s standards.
- iMovie and iPhoto. I’ve never used either but they’re apparently pretty nifty and allow you to quickly and easily edit movies and photos all from your iPad.
- iSight. The ipad 3 now boasts a 5 mega pixel camera, pretty good quality considering they had to find room in there among all the other impressive tech specs that no one really understands.
All in all the iPad 3 is a pretty good product. If you’re a self confessed Apple addict then it’s a must have product. Have you forked out for the new iPad 3? Or are you just going to wait for the inevitable release of the iPad 4? Let me know what you think in the comment box below.
